Setting Sail with Zero Emissions in the Greater Bay Area | SETH Electric Propulsion System Powers Hong Kong Green Shipping Project
Release date:2026-03-06 Click volume:21

Recently, the first batch of five fully battery-powered ships for the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department's waste-to-energy project were successfully delivered in Guangzhou. This batch of ships includes the NEW NORTH LANTAU, the YUNG SHUE WAN II, the MUI WO II, the SOK KWO WAN II and the ISLAND LINK II. Funded by Canvest Environmental Protection Group Company (acquired by Grandblue Environment Co., Ltd. in 2025), constructed by Guangzhou Ocean Crown Technology Co., Ltd. and designed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd, these ships will primarily transport waste containers between North Lantau and Hong Kong's outlying islands.

All five ships are equipped with the S-Renewable new energy propulsion system developed by SETH. Leveraging proprietary DC-Link technology and containerized power supply for seagoing vessels, these systems could achieve zero emissions, low noise, and high reliability throughout navigation and operations. This contributes to the green development of the shipping industry within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The NEW NORTH LANTAU

The NEW NORTH LANTAU is the first fully electric cargo ship operating in Hong Kong, compliant with CCS classification and Hong Kong's local vessel regulations. It has also obtained In-Water Survey certification and the supplementary Battery Power propulsion mark.

The successful delivery of this batch of electric vessels marks another significant expansion for SETH electric Cargo Ships from inland waterways to open sea. It represents a leap in the application of containerized power supply—from inland waterways containers to seagoing vessel containers—advancing battery-powered technology toward full-scale, all-scenario implementation.

This significant breakthrough not only demonstrates CSSC SETH’s leading capabilities in the research, development and manufacturing of electric cargo ship power systems, but also advances the concept of green shipping, laying a solid foundation for the environmental transformation of the shipping industry.
